Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and scores of other celebrities denounce Israeli aggression

Several Spanish filmmakers, actors, writers and musicians, led by Pedro Almodovar, Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz have denounced the Israeli aggression in Gaza, and have signed an open letter which they describe Israel’s actions as “genocide”.

They also urged the EU to “condemn the bombing by land, sea and air against the Palestinian civilian population in the Gaza Strip”.

In the open letter, the Oscar winners demand a ceasefire by Israel and urged it to “lift the blockade, which the Gaza Strip has suffered for more than a decade”.

“Gaza is living through horror these days, besieged and attacked by land, sea and air. Palestinians’ homes are being destroyed, they are being denied water, electricity [and] free movement to their hospitals, schools and fields while the international community does nothing”, the letter reads.

Directors Benito Zambrano and Montxo Armendariz, actors Rosa Maria Sarda, Eduardo Noriega and Lola Herrera, and musicians Nacho Campillo and AmaralCampillo are also among the signatories of the letter.

The letter also blames the fresh round of violence on the occupation of Palestinian territory by Israel, and said that Israel “continues to advance into and invade the Palestinian territories instead of returning to the 1967 borders”.

Bardem is known to be a political activist who frequently explores controversial issues. Only last week, he wrote a letter in a Spanish newspaper, in which he slammed the Israeli aggression in Gaza and the killing of civilians in the Palestinian enclave.

Several celebrities have, over the past 23 days of violence, shown their support for Gaza and their condemnation for Israel’s actions. Actors John Cusack, Mark Ruffalo, Mia Farrow, Rob Schneider, Matt Davis, Kerry Washington,Wilson Bethel, footballers Joey Barton, Mario Balotelli, novelist Ayelet Waldman, musician Tom Morello, Zayn Malik, basketball ace Andrew Bogut and several others have used their social media accounts to show their solidarity for the fallen in Gaza.
