Lebanon: Geagea denounces “massacre” in Gaza, laments over situation for Christians in Mosul

Leader of the Lebanese Forces Samir Geagea denounced the ongoing Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip.

“What is happening in Gaza is unacceptable by all accounts… from a humanitarian perspective this is unacceptable. It is about time for the Arab League to convene … and join its political capabilities to take steps and stop the Gaza war”, Geagea said.

He added that Arab nations have “enough influence and political power to the stop the massacre there in a very short time”.

He also spoke about the current situation in Iraq, particularly in Mosul, where Christians are being attacked by militants from Islamic State (IS) and have the choice of persecution or converting to Islam.

“I can’t find the words to describe the situation (in Mosul) because what is happening goes back to an era before Islam and Jahiliyah. It goes back to pre-history. ISIL is a criminal terrorist organization… and we call for confronting this phenomenon that has no elements that would help its continuation. It has no ties with Islam or Christianity and in case it was sustained, it will terminate Islam, Christianity and the Middle East”.

In a separate instance, Geagea said that Lebanon had regressed to a “pre-historic” phase, not because of IS attacks, but due to political factions.

“The presidential vacuum that we are witnessing is unacceptable, and it is no longer a farce only but a tragedy that is being reflected in a parliamentary and a ministerial vacuum”, he said at a delegation of the World Lebanese Cultural Union.

Geagea, who is running for President, received 48 votes in the first parliamentary session for selecting a new President on April 23rd. He has on multiple occasions called for quorum in the parliament but disagreements between mar 8 and March 14 coalitions have prevented the election of a new head of state to replace Michel Suleiman so far.
