Gaza: 31 killed in Israeli air strikes, including pregnant woman and family of Hamas member

Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip killed 31 Palestinians and wounded 120 others on Wednesday, after the temporary ceasefire between Hamas and Israel had ended a day earlier.

The infant son and wife of Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif were among those killed in an Israeli strike which leveled a six-story building in Gaza city, Ashraf al-Qudra, spokesman for the emergency services, said. It is not clear if Deif himself was either wounded or killed in the strikes. Hamas later confirmed the deaths of Deif’s wife and child. Another 45 people were injured in the strike, medics said.

The attack came only hours after fighting had resumed in the Palestinian enclave, where peace had prevailed for over a week as Egyptian mediators tried to broker a peace deal.

According to Qudra, the latest violence now raised the death toll to 2,030, with the number of people injured by the violence now over 10,300. Among the dead due to Wednesday’s strikes were seven children and three women, one of them pregnant; the violence had resumed on at 13:00 GMT on Tuesday.

The first strike on Wednesday killed Deif’s second wife, 27-yer-old Widad, and his son Ali, only seven months old. Rescue workers also pulled out the bodies of a 14-year-old boy and a 48-year-old woman from the rubble, Qudra added.

Later in the day, a four-year-old child and a man in his twenties were killed in a strike in the district of Zeitoun in Gaza city, medics said.’

Four others were also killed in separate strikes in the region, with two of them dying in the town of Beit Lahiya when a missile struck their motorcycle – both of them where reportedly wrapped in Hamas flags at their funerals, indicating that they were members of the Palestinian movement. Separately, a man succumbed to injuries he had sustained earlier during the Israeli aggression.
