Canadian universities do well in QS rankings

British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has published it annual list of QS World University Rankings, which saw 24 Canadian Universities find a place among the top 700 universities in the world. The QS rankings are one of the three most widely observed and influential international university rankings, alongside the Academic Ranking of World Universities and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The University of Toronto was the highest ranked Canadian university, finding itself at 20th in the overall list, with a healthy score of 92.4. It was followed closely by McGill University at 21st place, with a score of 91.5. The University of British Columbia, the Université de Montréal and University of Alberta were the other Canadian universities in the top 100. The Memorial University of Newfoundland, Ryerson University’s MBA College and the University of Windsor rounded off the Canadian Universities on the list.

The other Canadian universities on the list include McMaster University, University of Waterloo, University of Calgary, Queen’s University, Ontario, Western University, University of Ottawa, Simon Fraser University, Dalhousie University, University of Victoria, Laval University, York University, University of Guelph, Université de Sherbrooke, Concordia University, University of Saskatchewan, Université du Québec, Carleton University and University of Manitoba.

The publication said that the University of Toronto “has assembled one of the strongest research and teaching faculties in North America, presenting top students at all levels with an intellectual environment unmatched in breadth and depth on any other Canadian campus”. It also said that the university’s faculty “co-author more research articles than their colleagues at any university in the US or Canada other than Harvard”.

“As a measure of impact, (University of Toronto) consistently ranks alongside the top five US universities whose discoveries are most often cited by other researchers around the world. (The university’s) faculty are also widely recognized for their teaching strengths and commitment to graduate supervision”, it said.
