Canada : Muslim community in Windsor gathers food for people in need

This year , Muslim community  in Windsor  gathered this weekend for its 10th annual Ramadan food drive” Share the Spirit of Ramadan Food Drive” .  Almost 40 volunteers were collecting donations at the Devonshire Mall.

The group collected more  200  bags than last year  and the total was about 1,500 bags of food during the drive that is taking place during Ramadan .

Donors gave non-perishable food items and other volunteers prepared bags of food to be delivered to various local charities.

the food drive’s coordinator Sousan Khaled, said that it’s one of many causes being championed in the community. She added ,”To be giving back to the mosques, and to be giving to the food drive, and to be giving to humanitarian aid causes all around, and to different charities around Windsor at the same time, blessings are everywhere in this project and I’m really proud to say that” .

While many Muslims privately donate food during Ramadan, Sousan said the food drive on July 12 allows the Muslim community as a whole to give back and increase awareness about Islam.“It’s important to have these kinds of events…We’re a big community in Windsor and we should be helping each other. It’s not just about Islam, any human being would have that spirit of generosity.”

Annette Mason is with the Windsor Home Coalition, one of the charities to receive donations from the Ramadan food drive said “I think it’s marvelous because of people with the same thought, and it doesn’t make any difference where they come from, what language they speak, they know what it is to be hungry or things like that, and you just thank the Lord that it’s not you and that you can help other people that need help”.

According to Sousan Khaled , about 9,000 bags of food have been donated since the Share the Spirit of Ramadan Food Drive began 10 years ago.
