Yemen: More than 140 killed by IS attacks on Houthis mosques in Sanaa

Suicide bombers belong to Islamic state have attacked two mosques in Sanaa. More than 140 have been killed and more than 350 have been wounded .

Victims were attending Friday weekly prayers at mosques when the four bombers attacked the Badr mosque in Alsafeya District in central Sanaa  and Al-Hashosh mosque in Algiraf District . These mosques are known to be used mainly by supporters of the Houthi group (Shi’ite rebels) that controls most of northern Yemen, including the capital.

Islamic State, which have been set up a branch in Yemen last November for the first time announced that they are responsible for the attack on a statement was published on Twitter. They tweeted: “Let the polytheist Houthis know that the soldiers of the Islamic State will not rest and will not stay still until they extirpate them” and “God willing, this operation is only a part of the coming flood”. the IS group threatened to commit more attacks in Yemen against the Houthis and their supporters .

Among who killed in the bombings , the Yemeni shi’tie cleric and leader in the Houthi movement Murtada Almahtouri .

Badr Mosque and Al-Hashosh mosque bombers attacked prayers inside the building and detonated the explosive devices among prayers , and then while Survivors was escaping the second attacks happened on the main gates.

Also, another IS member tried to blow himself up in Saada Mosque. But the bomb killed only the bomber.

Tensions increased after Hadi moved to Aden in February since he escaped from Sanaa where was held under house arrest by Houthi forces when they controlled of the capital. Furthermore, On Friday warplanes targeted the presidential palace in Aden but he was unharmed.

Hadi has been trying to control Aden to challenge the Houthis’ ambitions to control the whole country.
