This year an Index released showing the most “miserable countries in the world in 2013 ” .
The “Misery Index” is adding together a country’s unemployment and inflation rates, The higher the number, the more “miserable” the country is. Its method was created by Arthur Okun, the American economist who was a chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers during President Johnson’s administration. he developed the original misery index for the United States and it was a popular measurement during the Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan presidencies.
Lately, this Index has been criticized after studies found that unemployment have more influences and effects on happiness rather than inflation. Also, Because of the noticeably absent for Some countries that famous for miserable situations from the index.
In the list there is many Muslim and Arab countries. Iran is on the top of the list as the second country in the list with score 61.6 ,the major factor for it was the high prices. Egypt is the next Muslim country in the list and it was the 6th with 38.1 because of the unemployment rate .Palestine and turkey rank 12 and 13 with 32.9 score and 32.7 respectively, unemployment was the major factor in Palestine and in turkey it was the interest rate .
Tunisia is in the 17th place with 29.5 score and also because of the unemployment . Next in the list is Jordan and it score is 25.3, the major factor was Unemployment too. Saudi Arabia , Algeria, morocco are in the 40th , 45th, 58th places also because of unemployment .with scores 18.9 ,16.8 ,13.3 .
And at the end at the Bottom of the list Qatar ranked 85th because of the high interest rate .
Remarkably, some of the Arab countries the famous for hard life and unstable situations like Syria , Yemen , Iraq ,Libya and Sudan are out of the list despite the presence of countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia .
