UN official asserts Ebola gaining ground fast, warns of outbreak

UN official Anthony Banbury, in charge of their Ebola Emergency response program, on Tuesday said that the world is losing the race to stop the outbreak of Ebola, amid dire predictions of several thousands of new Ebola infections before the year ends.

Ebola got a head start on us. It is far ahead of us, it is running faster than us, and it is winning the race. If Ebola wins, we the peoples of the United Nations lose so very much” Banbury said to the UN Security Council in New York from the UNMEER headquarters in Accra, Ghana via remote link.

According to the World Health Organization, the Ebola infection rate might soon get up to 10,000 a week. The World’s leaders will soon hold talks on the potential outbreak at the UN.
We either stop Ebola now or we face an entirely unprecedented situation for which we do not have a plan”, Banbury added.

The Briton also said that infection rates are increasing exponentially every day, and that UNMEER will need around 7,000 new beds for treatment.

There’s much bad news about Ebola but the good news is we know how to stop it, but to stop a contagion “we must defeat Ebola and we must do it fast”, he added.

According to WHO Assistant Director General Bruce Aylward, who described his statistics as a working forecast, the epidemic “could reach 5,000 to 10,000 cases per week by the first week of December”.

According to Alyward, the latest death toll from 8,914 infections stands at 4,447. The outbreak has hit the countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone the hardest. The WHO has described the outbreak as the most severe modern day epidemic. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and US President Barack Obama on Monday called for the world’s scientists to step up their efforts and find a solution to the hemorrhagic virus.
