Schools are the places where our kids learn a lot of skills and values. Freedom of speech is one of them. Our schools now are trying to suppress our kids and stop them from speaking their minds. They should be free to express their opinions without bothering with others feelings, truth, taste, etc. They should be able to say whatever they think of their classmates’ behaviors, looks, believes, families. They should be able to say whatever they want about their teachers too. Schools should take photos of students’ drawings on washrooms’ walls and frame it and exhibit it as “art work”. Schools shouldn’t listen to complains about being verbally abused and tell those kids that they only practicing “freedom of speech” and that they can do the same.
Our schools now give our kids mix messages and the kids who actually listen to them go to life unprepared and confused. They wouldn’t understand the freedom of speech and think that others should be respectful and even care about facts and the effect of their words. On the other hand, kids who were bullies and didn’t care will go to life prepared and ready. Ready to lie and hurt others. They can be show hosts, politicians, artists who are ready to speak their mind no matter of how stupid, harmful, false, or useless their opinions.
We should stop the anti-bullying ads that attack freedom of speech. Stop messing with our kids’ minds.
Schools should stop telling our kids that they should be honest and nice. Stop telling our kids to respect others.
I just wish I still have time to remedy my kids. I didn’t know that by telling them to respect others, be kind, argue ideas not persons and never make fun of others, that I was restricting their freedom of speech.
You know, I have to fix myself. I have always thought that laughing with others is fun but laughing at others is sick and tasteless.
