Iraq: violence continues, 28 die in blasts at police checkpoint

32 people were killed in attacks across Iraq on Monday, including 28 people killedin northern Iraq police checkpoint by roadside bomb and a truck rigged with explosives detonated by a suicide bomber.

According to Local official Shallal Abdul Baban, the blasts at a police checkpoint in Tuz Khurmatu killed 28 people and wounded 148 others, causing “great destruction”. The checkpoint targeted is close to an office of Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) party, to which President Jalal Talabani belongs.

Another suicide car bomb struck an army checkpoint to the south of the city of Baquba, killing two soldiers and leaving five other wounded, while two more people were killed in attacks in the capital city of Baghdad, officials said.

Militants in Iraq in recent days have launched major operations in 5 different provinces, killing several dozens of people and highlighting their reach and how weak the security forces in the country are. Iraq is going through its worst wave of violence in years, and the bloodshed will probably continue unabated as none of the problems which contribute to the unrest seem to be heading towards quick resolutions.

On Sunday, a car bomb and a suicide bomb targeting a PUK office and a Kurdish intelligence building killed 18 people in the town of Jalawla. The attacks were claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant on its Twitter account. Violence in other parts of Iraq killed 13 other people on Sunday. On Saturday, militants took several hundreds of people at Anbar University in Ramadi as hostages – after hours of fighting with security forces, the hostages were freed. Several blasts in Baghdad killed over 25 people.

On Friday, heavy fighting broke out in Mosul – the violence continued till Saturday, and, combined with violence in the Nineveh province, lead to the deaths of over 100 people. On Thursday, militants in vehicles fitted with anti-aircraft guns attacked Samarra and occupied parts of the city – they were dislodged only after heavy on-foot combat and helicopter strikes.
