Canada: Bomb threat to mosque in Montreal suburb

A bomb threat targeting a Muslim Mosque in the Montreal suburb of Chateauguay caused quite the stir on Wednesday morning, as several buildings were evacuated after a 911 call notifying Montreal police was made in earlier in the morning. This is the first time the mosque in Chateauguay was threatened.

The threat, made at 6:30 a.m., claimed that a bomb was placed at the Mosque on Crepin St; the police soon took action, and investigated every building near Crepin St. and Clermont St. for the bomb.

Police officers found a suspicious package at the front door of a building; the area was soon cordoned off, and twelve neighboring buildings were evacuated. Interestingly enough, the building with the package had no one inside it.

The Surete du Quebec bomb squad arrived at 9:40 a.m. and swiftly “neutralized the package” by around 10 a.m., Chateauguay police said, allowing neighbors to go back to their homes in peace. However, the police did not say if the package contained an explosive device or not; reports seem to indicate that the package did not contain an explosive.

“The police located the suspicious package in front of the building and immediately erected a security perimeter, conducting the evacuation of a dozen homes,” Nathalie Langevin, a spokesman for the Châteauguay police, said.
An investigation has been launched to find the perpetrator of the threat and the person who made the 911 call.
