On Tuesday, Turkey urged Israel to “immediately” stop its assault on the Gaza Strip, following its lethal air campaign on Gaza.
“We are calling on Israel to immediately halt its attacks on Gaza”, the Turkish foreign ministry said in its statement. It also urged the international community, particularly the United Nations, to get involved and warn Israel to relinquish its policy of “collective punishment”. It also called on all parties involved to take lessons from history and act with “restraint and common sense” to prevent any escalation of violence.
At least 13 people were killed and several dozens more wounded in Tuesday’s strikes on the Gaza Strip. Israel has said that it has been weighing all its options in an attempt to end rocket fire on southern Israel emerging from Gaza and to destroy Hamas’ military infrastructure. Later in the day, the United States condemned Hamas rocket fire into Israel, and said that it was concerned for civilians living on both sides of the border.
Josh Earnest, spokesman for the White House, also urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to keep a Palestinian diplomatic channel open to resolve crisis which started due to the murder of three Israeli teens, which was followed by the murder of a Palestinian teen.
“We strongly condemn the continuing rocket fire into Israel and the deliberate targeting of civilians by terrorist organizations in Gaza”, Earnest said. He also backed Israel’s “right” to respond to the attacks.
“No country can accept rocket fire aimed at civilians, and we support Israel’s right to defend itself against these vicious attacks”, he said.
He added that the US was mindful of the situation of civilians on both sides caught in the crossfire.
“This means both the residents of southern Israel who are forced to live under rocket fire in their homes and the civilians in Gaza who are subjected to the conflict because of Hamas’ violence”, he said.
