Kuwait: Attorney General asked to investigate coup claim and corruption scandal

On Monday, Kuwait’s Prime Minister and a senior Royal filed two different lawsuits at the Attorney General’s office, demanding an inquiry into allegations of a coup plotted against the government and a massive corruption scandal. Kuwait was shaken about two months ago when news of videotapes allegedly showing several former government officials plotting a coup surfaced, and only last week, former government officials were alleged of being corrupt.

Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Sabah wrote to the Attorney General, and demanded an investigation into “allegations of money laundering, abuse of public funds and (financial) dealing with Israel”, acting Justice Minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Sabah said during a televised interview to state news agency KUNA.

Sheikh Ahmad Fahad Al-Sabah, a former economy and energy minister and a senior member of the ruling family, made the accusation on Saturday. Sheikh Ahmad said that he had evidence of former officials plotting a coup against the government and material evidence of them stealing tens of billions of dollars from public funds. He has subsequently filed a lawsuit over the alleged corruption and conspiracy charges and handed over all evidence he collected, including video footage that showed the former officials plotting the coup, his lawyer Falah al-Hairaf said on Monday on popular website Twitter.

The government had in April said that the videotapes were not authentic and had been tampered with. However, in an interview, Sheikh Ahmad had said that he won a ruling made by a Swiss arbitration authority, later attested in the British Supreme Court, that the tapes were genuine.

On Monday, a group from members of Parliament labeled the allegations “the most serious corruption case in Kuwait’s modern history”. They also called for an international probe into the statement and for the parliament to be dissolved, the government to be sacked and elections to be held on the basis of electoral law prior to December 2012. They also demanded that all officials being accused in the case should be terminated and be held accountable.
