Iran reportedly to send Gaza aid through Egypt’s Rafah crossing

Iran reportedly intends to send aid to Gaza after Egypt said that it will allow the shipment to enter the Palestinian enclave.

The official IRNA news agency reported that Cairo had agreed to send humanitarian aid to Gaza, citing a source in the foreign ministry. The source added that the first Iranian Red Crescent shipment would consist almost 100 tons of food and medicine and will be flown “soon” to Cairo.

“The package weighs 100 tonnes and consists of food and medication”, the IRNA reported.
So far, at least 2,092 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since July 8th, in the worst Palestinian-Israeli conflict since the intifada from 2000-2005.

Towards the end of July, Tehran said that it had sent a shipment of aid to Cairo which was awaiting authorization to enter Gaza through the Rafah border crossing, the only crossing into the Palestinian enclave which isn’t controlled by Israel.

Gaza is among the most densely populated parts of the world, and many Gaza neighborhoods completely wrecked by the Israeli aggression.

Valerie Amos, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, during her visit to Iran, said that it will take several months to repair damage UN facilities had sustained by the Israeli aggression.

Ninety-Seven UNRWA installations, including food and health distribution centers, and schools which has been damaged by the war between Hamas and Israel.

Iran doesn’t recognize the state of Israel and provides military and financial assistance to several Palestinian groups. According to Iranian officials, Tehran has provided Hamas and other Palestinian groups with the technology need to resist the Israeli aggression. Iran has on several occasions condemned the Israeli Operation Protective Edge, with the Tehran municipality going so far as to name the street where UN headquarters is located as “Gaza Avenue”.
