The Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, on Wednesday warned foreign airliners against flying to Tel Aviv, threatening to escalate the conflict with Israel and declaring that truce talks in Egypt were over.
“We are warning international airlines and press them to stop flying into Ben Gurion airport from 6 am (0300 GMT) Thursday”, Abu Obeida, a spokesman for the al-Qassam Brigades said in a televised speech.
Obeida, dressed in military garb and wrapping his face with a checkered scarf, said that Hamas will abandon all efforts to negotiate a permanent ceasefire with Israel at the talks in Cairo.
“We are calling on the Palestinian delegation to withdraw immediately from Cairo and not to return.There will be no return to talks after today and any move in this direction will never achieve any result.The enemy lost a golden chance to reach a ceasefire with limited demands, for which it will pay after today”, he said.
The infant son and wife of the Qassam Brigades’ commander Mohammed Deif died in an Israeli air strike in Gaza City on Tuesday.
In his statement, Obeida said that Deif was alive and that “the Zionist enemy failed to assassinate general commander Abu Khaled”.
Earlier in the day, Hamas had separately said that Deif was alive and calling the shots in its ongoing retaliation to Israeli aggression in Gaza.
In a statement, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said, “The occupation will pay for its crimes against Palestinian civilians and those living around the Gaza border will not return home until Mohammed Deif decides so”.
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman had called for military action to overthrow the Palestinian movement, saying that Hamas was dictating the pace of the war.
“This policy of ‘quiet for quiet’ effectively means that Hamas is the initiator and the one deciding when, where and how to shoot at Israeli citizens.Hamas is controlling the height of the flames and choses when to disturb the rhythm of life for people in Israel.When we speak seriously about Israelis’ security we must understand that there is no other option other than decisive action with one meaning – toppling Hamas”, he wrote on his Facebook page.
