Gaza: Israel’s brutal offensive enters day 7, 177 Palestinians killed and counting

The ongoing Israeli air campaign against Gaza has till Monday caused the deaths of 177 Palestinians so far; a UN official reported that over a quarter of the deceased were children.

The victims of the latest round of strikes included a 37-year-old man in the city of Khan Yunis; according to Ashraf al-Qudra, spokesman for emergency services, a missile had struck a group of men in the city. A 60-year-old man and two others were killed in separate strikes in the city of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, Qudra added.

Earlier in the day, a woman and a man succumbed to injuries they had sustained in air strikes on Sunday, raising the total number of deaths on Monday to six. So far, 1,280 people have been wounded in the past week due to the Israeli air strikes.

The Gaza-based Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) on Sunday said that over three-fourths of the victims were civilian personnel. According to the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), over a quarter of them are children.

“All indications are, and I find this particularly dramatic, that women and children make up a sizable number of the victims of the current strikes. Currently more than one quarter of the fatalities are children”,Pierre Krahenbuhl, UNRWA Commissioner-General, said.

Earlier on Monday, the Israeli army said that it used Patriot surface-to-air-missiles to bring down a drone off the Ashdod coastline, some 28 kilometers to the north of Gaza. The Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ military wing, took responsibility for the UAV, and posted on its Twitter account that it had launched “a number of UAVs deep inside the Zionist enemy entity”.

Monday marked the seventh day of the Israeli air campaign on Gaza. Aircraft had targeted three Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades training facilities, although no casualties were reported due to the strikes.  They also took out buildings in Jabaliya, Deir el-Balah and Gaza City, wounding an undetermined number of people. Additionally, shelling was also reported in the city of Beit Lahiya, where Israel had warned residents of an imminent assault.
