Advertisements on buses linking Adolf Hitler with “Islamic Jew-hatred” are now running in Washington DC, with the First Amendment protecting the advertisements, and almost guaranteeing that they will run for quite some time.
The 15-foot-long ads are on the broadsides of twenty buses in the DC metro area. They feature a photo of Adolf Hitler seated with his “staunch ally” Haj Amin al-Husseini, Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestinian nationalist who had allied with the Third Reich during the Second World War. The advertisement’s text reads, “Islamic Jew-hatred: It’s in the Quran. Two-thirds of all US aid goes to Islamic countries. Stop racism. End all aid to Islamic countries”. A fine-print disclaimer from the Metro Transit authority is also printed on the advertisement.
The advertisements were placed by the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) and are set to run till June. The AFDI is a self-proclaimed human rights group which has been called an anti-Islam hate group by the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The AFDI says that the ads are a “response to the vicious Jew-hating ads that American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) unleashed on Washington, DC, Metro buses last month”. The advertisement in question had an image of the iconic ‘Uncle Sam’ holding an Israeli flag, and read “We’re sweating April 15 so Israelis don’t have to! Stop US aid to Israel’s occupation!” They were placed on Buses near the DC area on tax day, April 15th.
Dr. Osama Abu Irshaid, on the board of directors of AMP, said that during the current tough economic climate where Americans have not been able to pay their taxes easily, “our hard-earned money is going to a country that has implemented the last and longest-lasting military occupation in the modern world”.
Pamela Geller, AFDI President, who had described the AMP advertisement as “Jew hating” and “libelous”, took personal displease with the advertisement’s depiction of Uncle Sam. “Uncle Sam with the Star of David. Nuts. Think about the billions we are giving to Muslim Brotherhood jihadists in Egypt and Libya, Gaza, Judea and Samaria, the Taliban in Afghanistan, etc. A flag of jihad would be more appropriate”, she said.
