Chilean government suspends trade agreement with Israel in protest of Gaza assault

On Thursday, the Chilean government suspended its Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiation with Israel, and said that it was considering withdrawing its ambassador to Israel, protesting against the Israeli assault on Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian-Chilean parliamentary group, after meeting with ChileanMinister of Foreign Affairs Heraldo Munoz, said that the Chilean government will seek the condemnation of Israel by the UN Security council
Chilean senators and deputies of Palestinian origin left from the Palestinian Foreign ministry on Monday and demanded a stronger stance against Israel concerning its action in Gaza. As the death toll increases rapidly, lawmakers of all ethnicities have demanded urgent action from the government. Last week, Michelle Bachelet’s government had condemned the Israeli onslaught.

Chile, which is home to a vast Palestinian community, has seen its citizenry protest against the Isreali aggression. Activists have called for the boycott of Israel and hopes that the example they set will pave the way for others to follow in their path.

On Monday, the government, through parliamentary and civil organizations and the Foreign Ministry, publicly demonstrated against Israel’s assault. Protestors said they were against the aggression and endorsed UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s call for a quick solution.

On Monday, the Palestinian-Chilean inter-parliamentary group called on Heraldo Muñoz to safeguard human rights in Gaza. The group’s chairman Patrick Vallespín met with Muñoz to speak about suspending the Free Trade Agreement.

“We’re calm, but alert, in some way or another, the chancellor has confirmed us that the condemnation of this subject by the government of Chile in the Security Council of United Nations. And we also go with the peace of mind that remains frozen, from every point of view, any advance free trade agreement with Israel, as it has no support, and in addition will propose removing the Ambassador of Chile, to which he replied they are assessing whether perhaps it is better to keep expressing the critical stance of Chile to the facts”, Vallespín said.
