Arab League calls for urgent meeting of UN Security Council to discuss Gaza strikes

The Arab League on Tuesday called on the UN Security Council to talk about the lethal Israeli air campaign on the Gaza Strip, Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi said. On Tuesday, 13 people were killed in several attacks in the most serious conflict between the two since November 2012.

Earlier in the day, Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas asked global leaders to “immediately intervene to halt this dangerous escalation which would lead the region to more destruction and instability”

According to sources, Arabi has told the Arab League’s UN representative to start urgent consultations with the group and call for an emergency meeting of the Security Council. Arabi has said that he has been “in touch with president Abbas to follow the latest developments in the Gaza Strip” while also continuing “consultations with Arab foreign ministers on this subject”. He also denounced the “dangerous Israeli escalation” and warned of the humanitarian consequences in Gaza.

“The continued attacks on Palestinian civilians by Israel is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, the Geneva Convention and international resolutions on occupied Palestine”, he said.

Meanwhile, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which has a permanent delegation to the UN, announced that it will convene an “extraordinary” ministerial meeting on Thursday in Jeddah in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia to discuss “the intensifying and fierce Israeli campaign against Palestine”.

On Tuesday, Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip on Tuesday killed 13 Palestinians and wounded 80 others, emergency services said. Only hours prior to the first strike, Israel had announced the start of “Operation Protective Edge”, a military campaign intended to destroy Hamas’ military infrastructure and stamp out rocket fire on Israel. According to Israeli army statistics, since midnight, militants have launched 130 rockets at southern Israel, and the Israeli air force struck 150 “terror targets” in Gaza.
