Yemen: Rebels reject new Prime Minister

Shi’ite rebels in Yemen rejected the appointment of new Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed Awad Mubarak on Tuesday, in a major blow to hopes of restoring peace in the country. The Huthis had stormed into the capital on September 21st and established a strong military presence quickly, manning checkpoints and mounting patrols.

“We strongly reject this nomination, which is not in accord with the will of the nation and does not respond to the wishes of the people. This appointment is at the behest of outside forces, a denial of national sovereignty and . . . the rule of consensus that must direct the process of political transition”, the rebels said in a statement.

Only weeks after the Huthi rebels overran the Yemeni capital of Sana’a, President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi named Ahmed Awad Mubarak, his Chief of Staff, as the Prime Minister – the decree came after Hadi consulted his advisers and a rebel representative on his nomination, the Saba news agency reported.

The nomination comes two weeks later than expected, when a ceasefire deal mediated by the UN provided for withdrawal and disarmament of Huthis from Sana’a and revitalization of a political transition. The deal also stated that the Huthis would withdraw after a neutral Prime Minister was named. However, the rebels have not evacuated the city despite the deal, which promises them more power in the government.

Mubarak and Hadi must now try and restore government authority and negotiate a deal with the rebels to withdraw from Sana’a.

The rebel presence in the city has brought everyday businesses to a halt and exasperated citizens, who have twice marched onto the streets, demanding the evacuation of the rebels.

Mubarak replaces Mohamed Basindawa, whom the rebels had accused of corruption; Basindawa’s departure was one of the Huthis’ key demands on their march to Sana’a.
