UN agency calls Gaza destruction “immense”, wants warring parties to respect UN buildings

On Tuesday, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency described the damage caused by the Israeli air campaign on Gaza as “immense” and said that over 500 homes were razed in the past week.

“The level of human losses and destruction in Gaza is really immense. According to our latest figure, we are talking about 174 killed and well over 1,100 injured. This number will increase. The numbers are increasing by hours.A good number of those killed and injured are women and children. That is a cause of concern for UNRWA”, UNWRA spokesman Sami Mshasha told reporters. 194 Palestinians have been killed in the air campaign so far.

Mshasha also said that 560 homes were completely destroyed while thousands of buildings suffered damage during the campaign. He added that 47 UNWRA facilities had been damaged by rocket fire.

The UN agency has sent Israel GPS co-ordinates of 20 schools where it runs refugee camps for around 17,000 people. Mshasha called on both parties to respect UN buildings.

On Tuesday, Israel announced that it had accepted a ceasefire proposed by Egypt, but the move was never agreed to by Hamas; the ceasefire collapsed soon after. Mshasha said that without a stop to the fighting, the risk of a ground assault by Israel on Gaza remains, which could lead to even greater destruction and death.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in a separate statement, said that the air campaign had devastated the water supply in the enclave.

“Hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza are now without water. Within days, the entire population of the Strip may be desperately short of water.Water and electrical services are also affected as a result of the current hostilities. If they do not stop, the question is not if but when an already beleaguered population will face an acute water crisis”, Jacques de Maio, ‎Head of Delegation at ICRC in Palestinian territories and Israel, said.
