Syria: Regime air strikes on rebel town kill almost 50

Britain-based monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on Wednesday said that Syrian regime air strikes on a rebel-held town have killed 48 people in the past two days.

“On Tuesday, 25 people, including seven women and a child, were killed in air strikes on Talbisseh, in Homs province”, the monitor said, adding that a rebel commander was among those killed. Twenty-three people were killed in air strikes in the town of Talbisseh on Monday; the town has been under siege ever since rebel forces seized it almost two years ago.

State news agency SANA also reported that one person was killed on Wednesday in central Damascus.

According to a source in Damascus, the regime has confirmed that it had launched the air strikes on the rebel towns. The source, on the condition of anonymity, said that the rebel commander and his brother were killed in the air strikes. He also identified the dead rebel commander as Abu Hatem al-Dahik, the chief of the Al-Iman Brigade. The source also said that the Syrian regime will continue to target the rebels in their hideouts.

According to the observatory, the rebel fighters in Talbisseh had attacked regime positions near the rebel-held town Umm Sharshuh as fighting continued to rage around the town.

Both the towns are among several towns which are still under rebel control in the province of Homs after rebel forces had withdrawn from the city of Homs earlier in the year.

The Observatory has also updated to 18 its death toll for the number of rebel fighters killed in an attempt to storm the city of Damascus on Monday. It also said that two pro-regime militiamen were also among the dead.

Around 191,000 people have died since the uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime broke out in March 2011.
