Syria: Media outlets attack Arab authorization for US attacks

Syrian media on Tuesday accused Arab governments of giving the United States prior consent for military action against extremists. The remarks come ahead of discussions between US Secretary of State John Kerry and US allies in the region to be held on Thursday – they will likely talk about joint action to cope with the threat posed by the Islamic State (IS), especially in Iraq and Syria.

Syrian daily, Al-Baath, the mouthpiece of the regime, said, “Washington, which used the false pretext of weapons of mass destruction to enter the region militarily in 2003 and draw new geopolitical lines… is returning today under a new false pretext, the fight against terrorism”.

“The Arabs meanwhile, are absent from every decision and are playing secondary roles”, it said referring to the US-led invasion of its neighbor Iraq in 2003.

On Thursday, Kerry will meet with foreign minister from Jordan, Iraq, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt and six Gulf states in Saudi Arabia. The discussion is a part of the United States’ efforts to start a coalition to combat the IS.

The Arab League had on Sunday pledged to take “necessary measures” to confront the IS and said that it was ready for “international cooperation on all fronts”.

However, Syria and its ally Iran won’t be present at the talks, and Damascus fears that efforts to combat the IS will involve air strikes without its permission.

“The United States is setting the stage to bring new wars to the region. Its local partners are ready to carry out its orders without even knowing the details of the American plan”, State-run newspaper Al-Thawra said.

Government-run daily Tishrin questioned why US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Kerry were coming to region “when the Arab League has already given its prior agreement for a new war in the region organized by the United States.”
