Paris:Hollande meets with Mahmud Abbas, says they have a “solution” to Israel-Palestinian crisis

On Friday, French President Francois Hollande spoke to press personnel after his meeting with Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas in Paris, and said that a “solution to the conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis will be presented to the UN Security Council.

“We will have a resolution, to be presented to the Security Council, that will say very clearly what we expect from the (peace) process and what the solution to the conflict must be”, he told in a joint press conference.

Hollande also said that the current start-stop negotiations have been going on for “too long” and that “there is a perception that there will never be a solution to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, even though we know the outlines of a possible deal”.

In the most recent armed conflict, which began in July and ended in August, 2,140 Palestinians were killed, with the UN reporting that most of them were civilians. According to Hollande, this was “the third time that Gaza has been destroyed”.

“What we must look for is a durable peace accord”, he added, saying that the stalled peace talks “must now reach their end”.

Mahmud Abbas urged “all countries to assume their responsibilities to end a conflict that has lasted more than 66 years”.

“Making peace will give added legitimacy to the fight against terrorism in the region”, Abbas said.

Abbas, who has been trying to build support for a fresh Palestinian diplomatic push in the UN, said that France might be able to catalyze an Arab League-backed plan to call for an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory and the creation of a Palestinian state with 1967 international borders.

Abbas will head to New York after his trip to France ends to participate in the UN General Assembly, which starts on September 24th.

Palestinians already have observer state status in the UN, and are looking to join the International Criminal Court (ICC) so that they could demand the prosecution of Israel for alleged war crimes committed during the 50-day war.
