News websites shut down temporarily reportedly due to Syrian Electronic Army hack

Multiple news websites, including Canadian national broadcaster CBC, on Thursday were briefly hacked in an attack claimed by the Syrian Electronic Army.

A few users of the websites reported seeing a pop-up message that read “You’ve been hacked by the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA)”.

The hack targeted a network used by many businesses and news organizations; a tweet sent by a speculative Syrian Electronic Army twitter account seems to suggest that the attack was meant to coincide with the US holiday of Thanksgiving on Thursday.

The group claims to have used Gigya, a company which offers a customer identity management platform, to compromise sites via GoDaddy. On Thursday, the company issued a statement saying that it identified the issue at 6:45 a.m E.T and that the breach “resulted in the redirect of the Gigya.com domain for a subset of users”. It added that the issue was corrected by 7:40 a.m. and that the solution could take longer to take effect for some users.

“To be absolutely clear: neither Gigya’s platform itself nor any user, administrator or operational data has been compromised and was never at risk of being compromised”, CEO Patrick Salyer said.

He added that the company has taken measures to protect itself from future attacks. Other than the pop-up, the websites were reportedly not adversely affected, and that it only created a re-direct window to the SEA website.
The telegraph also reported that a part of its website was compromised by the attack.

“We’ve removed the component. No Telegraph user data was affected”, the Telegraph tweeted.
Other websites which were reportedly affected include the Independent, the Chicago Tribune, Forbes, PC World and CNBC.

This is not the first time the SEA has claimed responsibility for hacking major news sites; in August 2013, it claimed to have shut down the New York Times for a few hours. It also tried to hack into Twitter, only managing to cause some trouble for a few users.
