Lebanon to Gaza: You are not alone

Eight Lebanese television networks on Monday overcame their political differences to air a unified newscast in support of Gaza, where at least 572 people have been killed in a fortnight of Israeli aggression. The move was the first of its kind in the Arab world, and surprising constituted partisan local media outlets.

The newscast, titled “Gaza…you are not alone”, was broadcast at 8:10 p.m. on all local stations.

RenownedPalestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish kicked of proceedings with a tribute to his homeland with his poem “Ala Hathihi al-Ard Ma Yastaheq al-Hayat” (On this Land, There’s What is Worth Living For).

Eight reports, a report prepared by every TV channel, were broadcast afterward to shed light on the different aspects of the conflict in Gaza.

Future TV’s first report showed how people in Gaza were struggling during the month of Ramadan and could not observe the holy month like they usually would.

The second report prepared by OTV focused on Palestinian mothers, many of whom had lost children in the present and in past aggressions, suffering from years of occupation.

The third report by MTV pinpointed the plight of children in Gaza and the circumstances in which children lucky to survive have been forced to grow up.

LBCI’s fourth report focused on Israel’s assaults on Lebanon, and on the Israeli massacre in the town of Marwahin in 2006.The channel’s reporter Layal Haddad, who had covered the massacre, spoke to four children who had survived the war, and ended the report on four Palestinian children killen on a Gaza beach last week.

The fifth report by Al-Jadeed television concentrated on foreign volunteers that had joined the Palestinian resistance.

The sixth report, prepared by Hezbollah-affiliated al-Manar TV, traced the development of Palestinian weapons from “rocks to rockets”.

State-run Tele Liban prepared the seventh report and treaded over the history of Palestine’s resistance to Israel, and said that the resistance that “started with stones was militarized after the hearts of Arabs tuned into rocks”.

NBN television team prepared the last report in which it portrayed Palestinian refugees all over Lebanese camps living in suffering and the pain their fellow nationals are going through in the occupied territories.

The newscast ended with Darwish’s voice chanting “Ayyouha al-Marroun bayn al-Kalimat al-Abira” (Passers between the Passing Words).
