A suicide bomber targeted and bombed an army checkpoint at the Tayyouneh roundabout in the southern suburbs of Beirut, and at least one person was killed and twenty more were injured in the blast. Lebanon’s Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq, however, said that the security situation in the country is “under control”.
An army communiqué sent on Tuesday said that the suicide bomber was in a white Mercedes-Benz 300, with the license plate J/3247784. “The explosion wounded several people and the whereabouts of a General Security member remain unknown.The car was rigged with 25 kilograms of explosives”, the communiqué said. The army has cordoned off the location, with experts arriving swiftly at the scene of the bombing, which happened late on Monday night. According to media reports, DNA tests discovered at the bomb site belonged to security member Abdul Karim Hadraj.
The car bombing comes only three days after a suicide attack in eastern Lebanon killed one person and left 30 others wounded.
Mashnouq spoke about the situation to the As Safir newspaper, saying, “The attack indicates that the suicide bomber was confused, which is a sign that the security situation is under control. (All)security measures taken by the security and military agencies prompted the car to travel in the wrong direction, similar to Dahr al-Baydar’s bombing”.
Later on Tuesday, Mashnouq spoke about the attack with Speaker Nabih Berri in Ain al-Tineh.
“The priority now is for security and the readiness of security forces led to the failure of the two suicide attacks.I extend my condolences to the family of the General Security martyr”, Mashnouq said.
“I discussed the security plan with Speaker Berri and I support his viewpoint on the need to reactivate the work of institutions, whose paralysis is paralyzing the entire republic”, he added.
