The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim advocacy group in the United States has picked Roula Allouch, a female Muslim lawyer from Ohio, as its acting national board chair, replacing Omar Zaki, who had stepped down from his post after a two-year term.
“I would like to thank Omar Zaki for his service to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and to the defense of civil rights for all Americans.I hope to continue and strengthen CAIR’s efforts to enhance understanding of Islam and Muslims, to encourage civic participation by American Muslims and to build coalitions with like-minded individuals and organizations to promote justice and mutual understanding”, Allouch said in a statement.
Allouch is a practicing attorney in Kentucky and Ohio, and focussed on civil litigation, insurance defense and employment law. She is a member of the Cincinnati, Kentucky and American Bar Associations. She is the Kentucky young lawyer delegate to the American Bar Association House of Delegates and serves as a public service co-ordinator for the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division.
She had been vice-chair to Omar Zaki when he was the chairman of CAIR. She also had been President of the Cincinnati chapter of Cair from 2008 to 2013.
Nihad Awad, CAIR National Executive Director, welcomed the choice, and praised Allouch’s dedication.
“Roula’s dedication and legal expertise make her an ideal choice to head an organization that seeks to prevent the ongoing erosion of civil liberties in our society”, Awad said.
Although there are no official numbers, there are reportedly 7-8 million Muslims living in the United States. CAIR, established in 1994 and headquartered in Washington DC, is a non-profit grassroots organization, with 35 chapters and offices in the United States and Canada. It strives to improve the understanding of Islam, empower American Muslims, protect civil liberties, encourage dialogues and build coalitions which promote mutual understanding and justice.
