Kerry warns Iraqi Prime Minister not to stir up trouble

On Monday, US Secretary of State warned Iraq’s Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, telling him not to cause disturbances in the region as he backed newly-elected President Fuad Masum to combat the militants sweeping through the country. Kerry’s comments came after Maliki had, on state television on Sunday, announced that he will be registering a complaint against Masum.

Masum was elected on Thursday, in what is seen as a significant step towards assembling a government due to which Maliki may get kicked out of office despite the fact that his party had won the largest bloc during the April parliamentary elections.

“We stand absolutely squarely behind President Masum (who) has the responsibility for upholding the constitution of Iraq.He is the elected president and at this moment Iraq clearly made a statement that they are looking for change”, Kerry said in Sydney; the US Secretary of State is due to attend the annual U.S.-Australia military talks in Australia.

Maliki is under pressure to not stand for office for a third term. He filed his plans to register a complaint to the federal court, alleging that Masum, who is a Kurd, had violated the constitution twice – he said that Masum had failed to assign a Prime Minister-designate when forming a new government.

Kerry urged for calm and called for the completion of the constitutional process.

“Among the Shias it is very, very evident that they have three candidates or so for prime minister. None of them are Mr. Maliki. So what we urge the people of Iraq to do is to be calm. There should be no use of force, no introduction of troops or militias into this moment of democracy for Iraq.Iraq needs to finish its government formation process and the United States will do everything possible in order to support the upholding of the constitution”, he said.
