On Monday, several thousands of Palestinians gathered at that Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem to pray and stand in support of Gaza as the Muslim holiday of Eid ul-Fitr began. Police reports suggest that over 45,000 people were at the mosque, with many dressed in black T-shirts with “Gaza, supporting you is our Eid” and “We are all Gaza” written on them.
Several others were T-shirts supporting Hamas and its military wing the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, which has for the past 21 days been locked in battle against Israeli soldiers in Gaza. Police in Jerusalem stayed away from the crowd, which dispersed quickly without incident.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has greatly escalated tensions in West Bank and east Jerusalem. Almost every night, angry protestors have clashed with police forces and Israeli troops. So far, over 1,036 people have been killed in Gaza as a consequence of the war.
According to figures given out by the UN humanitarian agency (OCHA) during the weekend, since July 23rd, 11 Palestinians have been killed and another 600 have been injured in the conflict in Gaza. Ten of them, including one teen, were shot by Israeli soldiers, while the other man was killed by a settler, the UN report said.
In the early hours of Monday, protestors threw stones at soldiers till daybreak in the city of Yetta in West Bank.
According to security sources, three protestors were wounded by live fire while another three were arrested.
Following clashes in east Jerusalem, police spokeswoman Luba Samir said 22 people were arrested, bringing the total number of people arrested in east Jerusalem since July 2nd to 375; a Palestinian teen was abducted and killed on July 2nd in revenge for the abduction and killing of three Israeli teens in June. So far, 135 of them have been indicted on charges of disturbing the peace.
