On Thursday, the Israeli army said that it had struck a Syrian military position after presumed “errant fire” had struck the Israeli-occupied part of Golan Heights.
In a statement, the Israeli army said that “at least one projectile hit the northern Golan Heights”. A spokeswoman for the Israeli military said that it hit an open field, and did not cause anyone damage or physical harm.
“Initial reviews suggest that this was a result of errant fire from the internal fighting in Syria. In response, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) targeted a Syrian army position. Hits were confirmed”, the statement read.
Another spokeswoman for the Israeli army said that Israeli forces had fired an anti-tank missile at the Syrian position.
Israel has closely observed the fighting between rebel forces and Syrian troops near the armistice line at Golan Heights, and have feared a spillover of the conflict.
Meanwhile, former Druze MP Said Naffa was sentenced to 18 months in prison for travelling to Syria and meeting with a “foreign agent”, the Israeli justice ministry said. According to the charge-sheet, Naffa had travelled to Syria, which is still technically at war with Israel, in 2007 as a part of a delegation of 300 religious leaders from the community.
According to a statement from the ministry, Naffa had met with a leader from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine -General Command, an offshoot of the PFLP, which “is a terror organization”.
Naffa had initially denied that the meeting had occurred, saying that it was a chance encounter, but “the court determined it was a secret and planned meeting, which could harm the state’s security”, the ministry added.
According to the statement, the Nazareth district court sentenced him to a year for “contact with a foreign agent” and another half-year for organizing and taking part in the trip. It also said that the sentences will be served concurrently.
