Iran: Civilians protests on Quds day in support of Gaza

Iranians on Friday rallied together in solidarity for Palestinians struggling in Gaza due to Israel’s lethal assault. Iran holds Jerusalem Day, also known as Quds day, on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan to support Palestinians every year; this Friday’s demonstrations, however come on the 18th day of the lethal Israeli campaign in Gaza. Iran does not acknowledge the existence of Israel and supports the Palestinian groups that fight against Israel.

Demonstrations in Tehran and 700 other cities and towns all over the country on Friday, state television reported.
In Tehran, demonstrators carried placards that said “Death to Israel” and “Death to America”, converging from 9 different places in Tehran University.

Over 800 civilians have been killed so far in Gaza. Palestinian movement Hamas has for long been a supporter of Iran.

“The Islamic world must in unison declare this day one of anger, hatred, unity and resistance against Israel”, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said at a demonstration in Tehran. He also condemned “those who stay silent in the face of the Zionist regime’s crimes”.

“The world demands an end to the Gaza blockade, opening the Rafah crossing and halting attacks on Gaza so its people can live normally”, he said.

Rouhani was referring to Hamas’ demands for a truce with Israel, specifically the opening of the Rafah crossing, the only crossing into Gaza which isn’t controlled by Israel.

General Hossein Salami, Chief of IRGC Air Force and second in command of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, in his speech on state television struck a defiant tone, saying, “Now no place in the occupied territories is safe for the Zionists. The missiles of Palestinian fighters have a range well beyond what the Zionists believe”.

“We will continue house by house and avenge the blood of martyrs shed in Palestine”, he said.
