Israel’s air assault on Gaza entered its ninth day on Wednesday, with a total of 220 people killed and 1,550 injured by the attacks so far.
The latest Israeli strikes caused the deaths of four children in Gaza City, medics said. The four of them were on the beach when the shelling struck, emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said. Several other children injured in the strike are now taking refuge in a hotel close to the beach, were several journalists are staying.
At around 13:00 GMT, the first strike prompted adults and children on the beach to disperse, as others ran out to see what happened. The seconds and third strike followed soon, and struck huts on the beach, as terrified children panicked in the face of the strikes, which appear to have been launched by the Israeli navy; they targeted an area of the beach with small huts used by fishermen.
Amid the chaos, several children ran into a nearby hotel, with at least three of them having severe shrapnel injuries. Ambulances then evacuated the children, and also picked up other injured people on the b each, including a man who reportedly had a part of his leg missing.
The beachhead strike raised Wednesday’s death toll to fifteen. Earlier in the day, a 10-year-old boy and a 65-year-old woman were among the three people killed in a strike in the city of Khan Yunis; five others were also wounded in the attack, Ashraf al-Qudra said.
A strike on a house in the city of Rafah killed two men, which was immediately followed by a second strike that killed a young man who was reportedly a militant. Soon after, a third strike on the city caused the death of another man, Qudra said.
Also on Wednesday, a rocket struck Mohammed al-Arjani’s house in Khan Yunis, causing the death of his19-year-old son Abdullah. After an hour, tank fire from Israel led to the death of one person in the eastern part of Khan Yunis, Qudra said.
