G7 to increase defenses against Syrian Foreign Fighters

Leaders of the G7, the group of the seven industrialized nations Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom, on Thursday decided to tighten defenses against potential terror attacks by European Jihadists retiring from Syria.

At the close of a G7 summit, British Prime MinisterDavid Cameron said, “We have agreed to intensify efforts to address the issue of foreign fighters traveling to and from Syria”. He added that talks between Syria’s neighboring countries were taking place to strengthen their borders, especially considering the recent attack on a Jewish Museum in Brussels, believed to have been perpetrated by a young French jihadist fighter who had returned from Syria.

According to French President Francois Hollande, over 30 French fighters have died so far on the Syrian battlefront. Around 800 French citizens have reportedly taken part in the battle against    President Basahar Assad’s regime in Syria. Hollande also said that it was necessary to “to cooperate to prevent, dissuade and punish” foreign fighters “who can undermine our security”. Regarding the Brussels attack, Hollande said, “We have unfortunately just had proof of” the fact that foreign fighters could undermine security forces easily.

The Brussels attack is thought to have been perpetrated by 29-year-old Frenchman Mehdi Nemmouche, who has spent over a year in Syria fighting against the regime. The Brussels attack, which happened on May 24, also led to talks between Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo and US President Barack Obama. The attack led to the deaths of four people.

A statement released by G7 leaders read, “We resolve to intensify our efforts to address the threat arising from foreign fighters traveling to Syria”. Earlier in the week, EU anti-terror chief Gilles de Kerchove said that Europe can expect similar “small-scale attacks”.

“I don’t expect another 9/11.I don’t expect a major sophisticated attack”, he said.
