Demonstrators all over the world protest against Israeli aggression in Gaza
Thousands of civilians the world over took to the streets this past week to protest against the Israeli incursion in Gaza, calling on the world leaders to end the conflict.Since July 7th, Israel has killed over than 271 Palestinians and wounded over 1,770 people, destroyed at least 1,660 homes and displaced over 22,000 people.
In Turkey, police warded off hundreds of protestors who had gathered in Istanbul in front of the Israeli embassy. Demonstrators in Istanbul and Ankara had reportedly turned violent and started pelting stones at the residences of Israeli officials.
In Cairo, supporters of deposed Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi and members of his Muslim Brotherhood, marched in protest of the Israeli aggression and called out several Arab governments for their inaction regarding the conflict.
Protestors in Gaza called on the government of Egypt to open the Rafah crossing so that humanitarian aid can be sent to the Strip. Demonstrators gathered in Washington in the United States of America and protested in memory of the Palestinian children killed on Wednesday on a beach in Gaza.
Several pro-Palestinian protests were held on Wednesday in several French cities. All of them passed off without incident amid strict security. France, with the largest Muslim population in Western Europe and a 500,000-strong Jewish community, has been especially tense after the conflict began on July 8th.
The French police force has banned a pro-Palestinian demonstration that is set to be held on Saturday on Paris after protestors had last weekend tried to attack two synagogues in the city in a similar rally. In a statement on Friday, the police said that it couldn’t promise a safe march “due to heightened tensions” fueled by the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
During his trip to Niger on Friday, French President Francois Hollande said that the demonstrator would have been a “risk to public order”.
“We cannot allow the conflict to be imported into France. We cannot have demonstrators (from opposite sides) facing each other down, with a risk to public order”, he said.
In Toronto, Palestine House and the Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid (CAIA) are organizing a rally at the Israeli consulate on Saturday. The rally is being endorsed by the Toronto Coalition to Stop the War, Canadian Peace Alliance, Women in Solidarity with Palestine, Independent Jewish Voice and the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network.
