West Bank: Five Palestinians killed during “Day of Rage” protests

Security forces in Israel were on high alert on Friday after many Palestinians were shot and killed during a massive protest in West Bank against Israel’s military assault on Gaza.

According to security and medical sources, five Palestinians were killed on Friday in West Bank in two different incidents involving Israeli settlers and Israeli troops.

Three Palestinian men participating in a protest against the assault on Gaza were killed by gunfire from Israel troops in the village Beit Ummar near the city Hebron. In a separate incident, Israeli settlers shot at protesting Palestinians after throwing stones at their vehicle near the city of Nablus in West Bank, security sources said. An eighteen-year-old Palestinian was reportedly killed in the settler fire. Soon afterwards, Israeli soldiers arrived at the scene and launched tear gas before firing live bullets. Another Palestinian, a 22-year-old, was reportedly killed, sources said, and added that three other Palestinians were wounded by the Israeli gunfire.

A spokeswoman for the Israeli army did not comment on the gun violence in Beit Ummar, but said, without elaborating, that “confrontationsin which settlers were involved” had occurred between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers near Nablus. According to Israeli army radio, a female settler opened fire near Nablus.

Palestinian groups in West Bank declared a “Day of Rage” after clashes on Thursday night near West Bank and some parts of east Jerusalem. Israeli police had said that they would bar men under the age of 50 from the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem due to fears of violence concerning the lethal Gaza campaign. The mosque is usually packed with people praying during the holy month of Ramadan.

“Different units have been mobilized in and around the Old City. We’re prepared to deal with any disturbances”, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

However, demonstrators clashed with policemen outside the Old City in East Jerusalem. Reportedly one person was arrested by the police. In the city of Hebron in West Bank, nearly 1,000 Palestinians protested against Israel’s aggression in Gaza, while a similar demonstration also took place in the nearby city of Halhul.
