Report warns of “new level of hopelessness” for Syrian refugees

A new report by the Norwegian Refugee Council and the International Rescue Committee released on Wednesday suggested that the plight of Syrian refugees fleeing the civil war has reached “a new level of hopelessness” as overstretched neighboring countries make it a lot more difficult to escape and developed nations like the US only resettle a small number of refugees.

According to the report, the number of Syrian refugees has dropped drastically; only 18,483 refugees were registered in October, while an average of 150,000 refugees were registered each month in 2013 with the UN refugee committee.

“We are witnessing a total collapse of international solidarity with millions of Syrian civilians”, Norwegian Refugee Council Secretary General Jan Egeland said.

Syria’s neighbors, including Jordan and Lebanon, have warned that they have reached a breaking point – last month, Lebanon rejected all but “exceptional” refugee cases. Around 3.3 million people have fled from Syria during the Syrian civil war; Lebanon has taken in around a third of them. Millions more are displaced within Syria.

Other Syrian neighbors, including Iraq and Turkey, say that the flood of refugees has strained resources and jeopardizes political stability. The report also praises the countries for taking in over millions of people.

“In September and October 2014 alone, Turkey received 190,000 refugees, far more than the entire international community has committed to resettle since the start of the Syrian conflict”, the report says.
The surge occurred when people were fleeing the country due to attacks spearheaded by extremist group Islamic State.

The report also said that the US and European countries have been reluctant to let in Syrian refugees – the US has resettled only 166 refugees from Syria by September.
Despite being the world’s largest resettlement country, the US has not yet stated how many Syrian refugees it will let in.

The US “needs to do more, and quickly”, the report suggested.
