Iran cuts nuclear stockpile, engages with bomb probe: IAEA

Iran has reduced 80% of its nuclear stockpile, according to IAEA report
The International Atomic Energy Agency on Friday said that Iran has gotten rid of 80% of its nuclear stockpile under an interim deal with world powers, and that it has begun engaging with Iran on a long-stalled investigation into suspected weapons research.

In its quarterly report, the IAEA said that the findings will probably be welcomed by the six international powers France, the United States, Britain, Germany, China and Russia, who are trying to work-out a long-term deal with Iran and on ending the dispute over its nuclear program to dispel fears of a brand-new war in the Middle East.
Analysts and diplomats, however, caution that the positions of the United States, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia and the position of Iran are far apart and any successful outcome is far from certain.

Iran rejects allegations that it has been developing the capacity to build nuclear weapons. It has, however, offered to work with the IAEA so that they could resolve its concerns. The IAEA has had an important role in verifying Iran is undertaking the steps it agreed to as a part of the interim deal. The breakthrough agreement, which took effect on 20th January, states that Iran will stop certain aspects of its nuclear program in exchange for limited relief froma few international sanctions laid on its economy. The deal was design to extend the deadline for a final deal, talks for which began in February.

In the report, the IAEA stated that since January, Iran has reduced its stockpile of higher-grade enriched Uranium gas by about 82%. Higher-grade enriched uranium is one step away from being weapons-grade Uranium. Most of it has been either diluted or converted to a lesser from. Only 40 kg of the material now remains in the country – far less that the 350 kg experts say is required from a bomb.
