Venice: Human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin weds George Clooney at private ceremony

Lebanon-born British Human Rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin married American actor George Clooney in Venice on Saturday in a high-profile wedding ceremony, before spending the night partying with the actor’s A-list friends.
“George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin were married today (September 27) in a private ceremony in Venice, Italy”, Stan Rosenfield, a spokesman for Clooney, said.

The announcement was a surprise as the couple was expected to get married on Monday. Earlier in the evening, an ecstatic Clooney swept through the Grand Canal to attend his wedding party at the seven-star Aman Hotel, as his friends were flown in from all over the world to attend the party; Alamuddin stayed inside the hotel and out of sight. The hotel management had signed a confidentiality agreement with Clooney’s people.

The guests included U2’s Bono, US Vogue editor Anna Wintour, actors Matt Damon, Ellen Barkin, Bill Murray, Emily Blunt, Cindy Crawford and her entrepreneur husband Rande Gerber was rumored to be the best man. Clooney’s taxi driver in Venice Alessandro Greco was also invited, and seen in a tux entering the hotel along with the other guests.

Actor Brad Pitt, however, was curiously missing – Pitt was expected to attend, but was not seen at the wedding.

The ceremony was reportedly held in English and officiated by Walter Veltroni, the former Mayor of Rome and an old friend of Clooney. According to Italian daily Il Gazzettino, a pianist, a double-bassist and a saxophonist were playing for guests at the wedding; the Corriere del Veneto reported that a “small group of strings” played Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.

The hotel’s restaurant was changed into a nightclub, where Clooney had dedicated the song “When I fall in Love” to Alamuddin.

On Sunday, the two smiled and waved from the boat that had picked them up at the hotel, in their first public appearance together after the wedding.
