Arab League nations agree to “confront” IS extremists

Arab League nations on Sunday agreed to take the “necessary measures” to confront militants from the Islamic State, Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi said after they meet in Cairo.

“The Arab foreign ministers have agreed to take the necessary measures to confront terrorist groups including (the Islamic State)”, Arabi said at a press conference, without explicitly supporting calls from the US for a coalition to support its air campaign against the extremists in Iraq.

“What is needed is a clear decision for a comprehensive confrontation, militarily and politically”, Arabi added, only a day after he and the US Secretary of State John Kerry spoke about taking action against the extremist group.

The US is looking for expansive support for its campaign against the IS, which the US air force has targeted in Iraq.

Iraq had earlier welcomed US President Barack Obama’s proposal for an international coalition against the extremists, calling it a “strong message of support”. Obama had outlined the proposal at a NATO summit on Friday.

Arabi has said that the IS posed a threat to Iraq and other nations in the region.

“What is happening in Iraq is that the terrorist organization not only threatens a state’s authority, but threatens its very existence and the existence of other states”, he said.

On Sunday, the US expanded its air campaign against the extremists in Iraq’s Sunni heartland, striking at IS fighters to the west of Baghdad, as Iraqi soldiers started their ground assault.

Other than the conflict in Iraq and Syria, Arab nations are concerned that the Islamic State is working with domestic extremists, and militants who travel to fight with the IS may conduct attacks when they come back home. Several such militants have already carried out attacks against Egyptian security forces since the ousting of Mohammed Morsi.
