Al-Qaeda leader criticized in tape allegedly made by ISIL spokesman, says it will not leave Syria

An audio tape allegedly made by Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, spokesman for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), sharply criticized al-Qaeda’s leader Ayman al-Zawahiri and rejected his call for the ISIL to leave Syria. The tape also urged him to remove Abu Mohammed al-Jolani as the leader of the al-Nusra Front, the al-Qaeda’s local affiliate in the country.

The audio recording was posted on several jihadist forums on Sunday. In the recording, Adnani is reported to have said that “Sheikh Osama gathered all the mujahedeen (holy warriors) with one word, but you divided them and tore them apart”, referring to slain militant Osama Bin Laden. The tape then proceeds to call on Zawahari to replace Abu Mohammed al-Jolani as the leader of the al-Nusra, saying “Either you continue with your mistake and remain stubborn, and the division and fighting among the mujahedeen will continue, or you confess to your mistake and correct it”.

“You make the mujahedeen sad, and make the enemy of the mujahedeen gloat because you support the traitor (Jolani), and you make the heart bleed — you are the one who instigated the strife, and you have to extinguish it. Review yourself and stand in front of God to correct what you have ruined”, it added.

The tape also rejected Zawahiri’s multiple calls that the ISIL should leave Syria and restrict its activities to Iraq, saying that it was “impossible because it is unreasonable, unrealistic and illegitimate”.

The unrelenting infighting between the al-Nusra and the ISIL has prompted over 60,000 people in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor in Syria to flee from their towns. The latest set of battles started after moderate rebels and Islamists, later joined by the al-Nusra, launched an offensive against the ISIL earlier in the year. Both the al-Nusra and the ISIL oppose the rule of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
